Christmas Memory
My favorite Christmas memory is from my college days. I was attending Memphis State University. I lived on campus but had family across town, so I'd alternate going to my grandparents and my uncle's to get a hot meal and wash clothes. I didn't have a laundry basket, so I'd put my laundry in a box and head out.
Since my dad is the oldest of five, I have lots of cousins. Everybody would get together at my grandparents house on Christmas Eve--aunts, uncles, cousins. It was a full house to say the least. Everyone had presents for everyone else, so it was quite the event.
The Christmas of my freshman year, my uncle brought all his family's presents in a laundry basket. I never thought anything about it until it came time for him to pass out his family's gifts. You have to understand that my oldest cousin is only one year younger than I am, and everybody always gave us matching presents. When my uncle did not have a matching present for me like my cousin's, I knew something was up.
After he'd passed out all the presents from his family, he walked over and gave me the laundry basket.

One of my most remembered Christmas memories was when I was stationed at DaNang, Vietnam in the Air Force. Two days before Christmas Bob Hope was scheduled to have his annual Christmas show at DaNang. We started arriving at the show location early, which was an outside location, around 8 am for a 1 pm show. It was raining when we arrived and it continued raining all morning. We were outside on the side of a hill anxiously awaiting his arrival. As his helicopter was touching down, the rain stopped for the first time in two days and the show went on. Later on as Silent Night was being sung to end the show, it started raining again and continued for the rest of the day. The man had connections. His show brought a little bit of home to us and made our Christmas a little brighter. The entertainers that make the trip today to entertain are giving the troops a great Christmas present.
Thanks Bert for blogging this subject. I'm sure a lot of Christmas memories will be remembered, maybe for the first time in many years. I hope everyone has a good Holiday Season.
I JUST FINISHED READING A STORY IN THE CHICAGO SUNTIMES ABOUT SOUTHWEST AIRLINES GETTING A WOMAN ON A FLIGHT TO GET BACK TO HER DYING FATHER "FOR FREE" WHERE OTHER AIRLINES WANTED 800.00 DOLLARS TO DO IT. FANTASTIC AGAIN SOUTHWEST PROVED EMPLOYEES DRIVE THIS FANTASTIC AIRLINES.
MY WIFE FLIES WITH ME WHEN I HAVE TO GO OUT OF TOWN FOR WORK (45 WEEKS A YEAR) SHE HAS A COMPANION TICKET AND HAS NEVER BEEN TURNED DOWN FOR A FLIGHT. OUT OF THOSE 45 WEEKS I FLY SOUTHWEST 40 TIMES . I WISH YOU COULD KICK DELTA OUT OF ATLANTA SO I COULD GO SOUTHWEST. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT KEEP IT UP BESIDES FLYING THE WOMAN BACK HOME SOUTHWEST HAD A CAR WAITING TO TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL WOW WHAT AN AIRLINE. THE EMPLOYEE THAT DID THAT SHOULD HAVE THERE PICTURE PLASTED ALL OVER THE AIRPORT WITH THE STORY THAT APPEARED IN THE CHICAGO SUNTIMES ON DEC 23 2007. KEEP GOING AND MAKE FOOLS OF THE OTHER AIRLINES , WHICH I HATE TO DEAL WITH. TRY TO GET THAT SERVICE OUT OF UNITED, THEY WILL TELL YOU TO LEAVE YOUR BAGGAGE AND WALK HOME.......... GREAT JOB
One of my favorite Christmas memories was back in the '80s. I picked out one present to open Christmas Eve night but was told to open another one instead; I did, not really thinking too much about it. The present I opened was my first Cabbage Patch Doll! Oh, I was so excited! Her name was Cissy Coral & she had brown hair in braids.
I remember when I transferred away to college & came home for the holidays. The college I graduated from was in a small town (I live in a big city) about 2 1/2 hours from home & I was certainly excited to be home longer than a weekend or short break, like Fall Break! Christmas Break was a month.
My church has three Christmas Eve services, & I (even when it's not Christmas Eve) always enjoy attending one of them. :)
Thought for the day: Why are they called snow cones when they're not made out of snow? Maybe it's because they're so cold. You can make one out of snow, but even though I've never done it, I wouldn't try it!
SWA LUV! :)
