Sofia Proll and the iPhone App

By:

A lot of people might think the title of this blog sounds a bit like an Agatha Christie novel. Perhaps with enough time and effort it could become my first novel. Realistically? I have my doubts. Lots of story ideas come to me and some are short and some are longer. For this episode, Red Belly Radio comes in two (shorter) segments. Of everything to pick from, the first part... read more

Southwest’s “Queen of Hearts”

By:

As March draws to a close, I’d like to point out that it is Women’s History Month—perhaps a little-known fact for most people. The celebration actually began in 1978 as “Women’s History Week,” and was later expanded to an entire month by Congress in 1987. It’s an occasion that usually just slips on by, but I wanted to take the time to highlight one of the most... read more

Something’s a-brewin’ onboard…

By:

Ask anyone who flies their opinion of inflight coffee. Odds are they'll wrinkle their nose in disgust and shake their head quickly. This nonverbal gesture most likely means, "Plane coffee is icky and I prefer only to drink it in extreme emergencies--like before a sudden onset of narcolepsy." Coffee at 36,000 feet has gotten a bad rap throughout the years, but it's... read more

Bring Your Chili to Work Day

By:

No, it’s not a typo. On Monday, the SWA Communications department held a mini chili cook-off competition called Bring Your Chili to Work Day; and seven Communications Employees “BU- ROT – IT!” The smell of meat and spices hung heavy in the air to the dismay of a few people, and in several cubicles, a crock pot could be found plugged in under the desk. They meant... read more

Flog The Captain

By:

If the word “Blog” is short for web log, would a flight log be called “Flog?”  With March being Women’s History Month, I recalled an interview with Captain Nancy Martin Belitz that I recorded several months ago for Red Belly Radio. I ask this 20-year Employee about working in a male-dominated field and about being a Pilot. Nancy also shares a story of her favorite... read more

A Fight to the Finish: Jodi and Christie are Out, but NOT Down

By:

Like many of life's adventures, The Amazing Race had to come to an end, and for Southwest Flight Attendants and reality television stars, Jodi and Christie, it ended on the sixth leg. The remaining seven teams traveled together on the same flight to Jaipur, India's "Pink City."  J/C were second out of the gate (the airport gate, that is) behind Tammy and Victor,... read more

Behind the Scenes at Spirit’s March Edition

By:

If you’ve seen the current "Cocktail" in the March issue of Spirit, you may wonder why we thought it was a good idea to make a milkshake with Guinness beer, using the recipe from the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. Personally, I’ve had a Guinness shake—several of them, actually—and it’s really not bad. Plus it greatly exceeds the minimum daily... read more
