Southwest Airlines: 7th Most Admired Company in the World

By:

Each year, about this time, I am on pins and needles.  Why?  Because this is when FORTUNE’s World’s Most Admired Companies list is released.  Southwest has been on the Most Admired list every year since 1994 and all but twice we’ve ranked in the Top 10. So, I am always filled with anticipation to see the results.  I am pleased to announce that... read more

Adopt-A-Pilot Reaches More Than 400,000 Kids

By:

For me, it’s important that we invest in the future of our country by giving from the heart and devoting time to the future generations.  Through Southwest’s Adopt-A-Pilot Program, we Pilots have the opportunity to go into classrooms all across America and help shape impressionable minds.  Helping kids dream big dreams—this is why I volunteer for Southwest’s... read more

Austin Sings Praises of Musician-Turned-Southwest Agent

By:

Southwest Employee Jessica Eierdam has been in the business of making people smile for years. “The summer after high school, I was signed to Hollywood Records as a recording artist,” Jessica said. “I have released two albums and spent my early 20s touring the country. That’s where I caught the travel bug!” Under her maiden name, Jessica Riddle, she released the hit,... read more

Going Green: Penny Pinchin’ in the Kitchen

By:

A majority of my early childhood memories consist of sitting on the kitchen counter watching my parents cook exquisite meals together.   As I grew older, I slowly became more involved in their food adventures—something that served me well throughout college—and I developed my own love of food and cooking.  I have now graduated from school and relocated to... read more

History Comes to Life

This year for Black History Month, Southwest teamed up with The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum to send four of the wax figures from the museum on tour to Southwest properties across the country.  One of the five cities chosen to host the figures was Oklahoma City.  Once I found out the figures were coming here, I started talking to my son about... read more

Flashback Fridays: Little Known ProfitSharing Factoids

By:

For as long as I have been with Southwest, winter has also been the “season” for Messages to the Field (where our CEO delivers a "state of the airline," talks about the priorities for the year, and fields questions from Employees). One of the traditional announcements at the Messages that affects all of our Employees is the amount of the Company’s contribution to our... read more

Happy Chinese New Year!

By:

According to the lunar calendar, 2013 is the Year of the Snake and begins on February 10th.  Unlike the Gregorian calendar, where New Year’s Day is consistent (January 1st), the actual date of Chinese (aka Lunar) New Year ranges from late-January to mid-February.  This is because it’s celebrated on the day of the first new moon of a new year.  Similar to the... read more

The Flower That Never Wilts

By:

Meet Greg.   I did while sitting in the coveted middle seat on a flight to TUL, and he showed me many things—pictures of his grandchildren, his passion for giving back, and his LUV for Southwest Airlines. He even had his favorite Southwest Customer Relations Representative’s extension memorized and was working with her (shout out to the dear Julie Meador!) and the... read more

Going Green: Green Math 101

By:

I was never very good at math.  Numbers + letters + symbols = absolute confusion, and although my mother is a calculus teacher, her proficiency with numbers apparently skipped a generation. One thing I am well-versed in, however, is saving money, and if it helps the Planet, that’s a plus! Take a look around your office and home; I would bet some of these energy-saving... read more
