Answer to the Colleen Flower Power Poll
Answer to the Colleen Flower Power Poll
Here is the correct answer for last week's poll. Like most who grew up during the turbulent 1960s, portions of the “flower power” movement rubbed off on Colleen and the rest of us. The music lives on today; the clothes get recycled every few years in the latest “retro” moment, and if you look at most Hollywood films (whether it’s The Graduate, Airport, Bullitt, Help, and many others) that were made from 1966 to 1969 and which depict what was current society, they have a certain unmistakable look.
Anyway, how did our Southwest Mom give her own mom grey hair during the late 60s? Well, Colleen’s family didn’t have much money, so that leaves out a trip to San Francisco—at least an airline trip. (Remember, this was before Southwest’s low fares took to the skies.) She didn’t have time to hitch a ride to a “love-in there in the streets of San Francisco.”
And yes, the chant at the 1968 Democratic convention was that the “whole world’s watching,” but that didn’t include Colleen. A flight to the Windy City was too expensive, and we don’t think she was very interested in politics at that age.
A VW Bus would be the appropriate vote, except for one important consideration. Colleen doesn’t drive because of a depth-perception problem. But don’t worry, that has only served to sharpen her other senses of perception.
So, if you said that Colleen went to Woodstock, you would be right. By the time she arrived at Max Yasgur’s farm, she was part of a group that was “half a million strong.” Oh, and the music. The list of performers who played there is amazing and includes: Creedence, Santana, Janis Joplin, Richie Havens, The Jefferson Airplane, The Who, The Band, Joe Cocker, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Jimi Hendrix, and a ton more.
