Here's a quick TGIF post for everyone interested in our special liveries. Hank Greenburg, one of our Customers, sent in this photo of a radio-controlled model of a vintage DC-3 painted in Lone Star One colors. The kit is from Top Flite, and it is powered by two Saito .40 engines, and it made its maiden flight on April 29. Obviously, Southwest never flew DC-3s, although I filled the barf bags on lots of Continental's "Threes" when I was a kid, due to the bumpy ride (and not my mom's liver and onions).
I guess we would have to call this a "retro-fantasy-2006 meets 1946" livery. (Remember how, in the movie Airplane, they kept playing the sound of a prop plane while showing a jet?) Thanks Mr. Greenberg, maybe we can land your DC-3 next to a New York Central steam engine painted in Amtrak colors--talk about mixed metaphors. Okay, maybe not. Airplane! is a fantastic movie. If Southwest ever introduces IFE, that film should be in heavy rotation.
Canyon Blue was a great choice for the new colors. You can always tell when you see a Southwest plane in the sky. All the other planes look alike.

Say a Capitol One or DC One?
At the risk of sounding heretical, I have to say that something about that big blue star makes me think of the late, not-so-great Texas International Airlines, a part of the evil empire that tried to keep Southwest out of the skies in the 1960s and 1970s. Maybe it's poetic justice that Southwest is now flaunting that star all over the country.
Ummm, Scott, the star is white. TI did have a blue one, but the Texas flag's star is white.
I always avoided that other airline so I don't recall their exact color scheme. I just remember that they had a star on their planes, not as nice as yours, of course. hehe
I agree with my fellow Scott that a special livery for the new Dulles service would be great, but it can't be "Capitol One" because that's too close to the name of a credit card company in Richmond! Maybe you could just paint a parade of lobbyists marching down both sides of the plane toward a Capitol dome on the tail. That would represent DC as authentically as the Texas flag represents Dallas.
