Interning at Southwest
Interning at Southwest
A day at SeaWorld to visit Shamu, scavenger hunts around the office, a 70's themed birthday party, celebrations every Friday, and endless amount of peanuts! What more could a person ask of an internship? How about challenging work, immediate acceptance into a work group, hands-on experience, and inspiration? These are just a few of the things my fellow summer Interns and I have experienced while interning at Southwest Airlines.
As the job market becomes more and more competitive, the opportunity to add an internship to one's resume is invaluable. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to intern for a Company that I LUV and respect, learning more about what I would like to do in the future. I am currently a business student at a Colorado university and have a strong interest in both internal and external Customer Service, and working in the Executive Office at Southwest has been the perfect opportunity for me to have hands-on experience in this field. Everyday I am learning more and more about how to give exemplarily service to both Employees and Customers. I am in awe of what I have observed while working for Southwest Airlines. The amount of time and effort (and, of course, care and concern) this office and Company puts into to fulfilling its mission to all the People it serves is unprecedented. There are times when I have questioned why certain things are done (thinking it couldn't be that important), but when I read the letters that Customers and Employees send describing the selfless actions of SWA Employees, I realize how important it is for everyone involved, and I then fully understand why they do everything they do.
Not only have I gained hands-on experience, but I also gained awesome memories and too many friends to count! The 37 Interns participating in the program this summer are all unique and amazing in their own ways (hint, hint to any recruiter reading this blog)…just like every other Employee within the Company. Not only do I have a great experience to add to my resume, but also almost 32,000 friends to add to my Christmas card list! I hate to realize that this experience must come to an end. I won't lie, thoughts of transferring to a Texas school have crossed my mind–just so I could become a permanent intern, but don't worry, Ma & Pa, I will be back in August to finish my degree.
My experience at Southwest Airlines has made me even more excited about entering the "real world" and starting my career. Six in the morning isn't that bad when everyday at work is FUN! I have a feeling that my career at Southwest Airlines has only begun–thanks to their amazing internship program. To any student out there debating on whether or not to apply – I say go for it! Interning at Southwest Airlines could quite possibly be one of the best experiences of your life!
(As Herb has said, maybe there is a chance for world peace. Here's a pic of Caitlin with another intern, Brian Claypool in Marketing, who is from arch-rival Colorado State.)

Good morning sparky! Great story! Your pa and I are very glad to hear that you're coming home soon and going to finish your degree here in Colorado! We're not quite ready to move to Texas yet... gotta sort out your room first! LUV and kisses! ma
LUVed your wonderful essay about the incredible experience there! Maybe you can go back as a Southwest Cheerleader??!! What fun would that be! So, so happy for you and your new 32,000 member family - yikes, the postage on those Christmas cards!!!
Can't wait to see you back here - and you can't move to Texas, yet!
Bonnie
GOD BLESS AMERICA! PURPLE WAVES OF GRAIN, GRANDMA MOSES AND APPLE PIE! CINDY FOR PRESIDENT!! TRAC
Caitlin you are so amazing! Boulder has not been the same here without you...I'm going to miss you so much next year. Who am I going to ask my i-really-should-already-know-the-answer-to-the-question questions to? I love you!
C-money!
You are so amazing. And you don't even know it. I am so PROUD of you and everything that you have accomplished. You have the golden touch. I love you with all of my heart. Plus come home safely to us.
Love, Megs
The only thing I don't like about you guys is that your white wine is swill. ;-)
That drops into the noise though, since , when I got to your terminal at Orlando and heard that a non-stop flight to Austin was boarding and I had tickets for a later fight through Hobby, I checked with one of your guys at a gate that wasn't so busy and found that there were two seats available which my wife and I could use our tickets to get on, and save about four hours out of our lives to get home.
Excellent !
Matter of fact, when we showed up at the gate about a minute later with our boarding passes, we filled up the airplane and your boarding folks knew who we were.
Kudos!
Can you fix the white wine thing?
BV Chardonnay is nice, and inexpesive, and Turning Leaf Chardonnay isn't all that bad if you can't afford BV.
Really. On the flight to Austin I ordered two glasses at once, and paid U$3 for each of them, but could barely stomach the first , so I discarded the second.
Oh, well...
John,
Sorry to hear that you don't like the wine. One of our bloggers, Richard Sweet did an earlier post about how we selected our wines and you can read it here.
Brian
I LUVed reading about your experience as an intern with SWA!! I am really really hoping that I will be able to intern with SWA in the Flight Ops department. I would LUV to experience an internship as exciting as yours! Thanks for sharing your story.
Ryan
Has anybody got an idea when LUV will present their quarterly results? Next week?
Peter Arbogast
Hi Peter,
Actually the quarterly results were announced a few weeks ago. Here is a link to the press release.
Blog Boy
Blog Boy. could you do me a favour, please?
I'm searching for an US-airline that will present their quarterly results on 20 Feb, next week. How can I manage to find that paticular line?
The next quarterly earnings report is to come out at approx 7:00 AM EDT on April 17, 2007 based on previous practice. But IR needs up to their portion of the site for the 2007 earnings calendar.
Hi Peter,
Sometimes the Wall Street Journal will present a list of companies with the dates of upcoming earnings reports. You might check the Yahoo financial pages/groups also. Honestly, I think all airlines have reported their 4th quarter results by now, but I could be wrong. Sometimes the carriers in bankruptcy wait longer. Delta just released theirs this week. Maybe it's Northwest?
Blog Boy
Thanks to Brian!
Peter
One airline must have reported their quarterly results yesterday - wooom - I can't find out which!
Can I get help here - please???
Peter
Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience. I am really hoping my husband will get the internship he applied for. Do you remember how long it takes to get a response to the application? Also any tips? Thank you!
