Southwest LUVs Guitars (and contests)!

Today, I bring you two things I love: musicians and a friendly competition. I’d like to challenge all of you to send us your BEST Southwest Airlines “Grab Your Bag—It’s On” music video!

Upload your video to any video-hosting web site you please, and then post the link in the blog comments below. A panel of sophisticated Southwest judges will award one lucky winner (and guest) two tickets to the San Jose Mariachi Festival: Concert Tribute to Cesar Chavez featuring Carlos Santana and Los Lobos. You’ll also receive two roundtrip tickets to get you to San Jose, and a two night stay at the Wyndham Hotel and Resort in San Jose!

Sounds like a good time, huh? Well our Chairman, President, and CEO Gary Kelly LUVs guitars, and if you will click here, you will see Gary with his guitar in an excerpt of a documentary in production called TONE.

The judges will be judging on the following qualities:
• Length: video must include at least 30 seconds of original music
• Originality: Your song must be completely original!
• Southwest Appeal: video should reflect our Culture and Fun-LUVing Attitude.
• Rules: you read and complied with the official rules

The contest is open today, September 16 at 10:00 a.m. CDT, and the comments section will close September 23 at 11:00 a.m. CDT.

I called my Google Voice account because it'll let you download your voice mail as mp3s. Then I played a few notes on my guitar (I don't actually know how to play the guitar), banged out a few beats on my wife's saute pan (I don't actually know how to play the saute pan, either), then I sang the vocals (I don't actually know how to sing.)

But Southwest has a contest for a video about their culture, so I thought I'd share some experiences on the subject.

I really would have liked to enter. Even if I'd have gotten the tweet on the 16th (didn't start following until the 21st) I would have had to rearrange things to get the video done. I would not send out something half-baked. I have the whole concept in my head, but the time to shoot and edit and do justice would be considerable. Some slip shod project is going to win. Almost all of the entries seem to not even come close to what was intended. That's a shame to see, and to even think about such a great prize given to such a lame effort. More lead time is needed if you want real quality entries.

I don't understand why the winner wasn't ever announce? Please share, pretty please? The rules say the winner will be featured on the Southwest Blog, when will that be?

In the rules: The winner was notified around Sept 23, but has a week to claim to the prize or it goes to another winner. It's possible that the winner is not being announced until all eligibility has been verified to prevent announcing an ineligible winner. Additionally, there are provisions in the rules for requesting a winner's list. If you want to know who the winner is, send a self addressed stamped envelope to SW's Emerging Media. Or you could, you know, be patient. Because if the initial winner is ineligible, you could still be judged the winner.
