Thunderstorms

A Customer recently said to me:  "I checked the weather for my flight and there are thunderstorms in the forecast. I am worried about what may happen as we fly along."

(Here goes Ray on another wacky analogy so hold on....)

Think of a thunderstorm as a giant tree --that moves!

If you get in your car to drive to the mall, all the real trees are along the roadside, and are unlikely to jump in your way. If we imagine thunderstorms as trees that move about, you can see that we would rather go around a tree as it moves into the road ahead rather than hit it.

Same with planes and thunderstorms. Other than a little chop, the only problem a thunderstorm presents to a plane is when it moves near the airport that the plane is either departing from or flying to. Pilots will avoid hazards by using different runways, holding short of the airport waiting for the thunderstorm to move on, or Pilots may choose to fly to an alternate airport to wait out the storm. In every case, the Pilots and airline Dispatchers make informed decisions on what obstacles are in their way and make plans to deal with these issues in a safe manner. If none of these options look feasible, the flight may delay takeoff until the destination airport will be in the clear.

Remember the satellite images of weather on the ground? That shows Crews and Dispatch personnel where the weather threats are. They deal with these weather phenomena all summer long. Relax, as they will do what they usually do, and take the most prudent and safest approach, which usually means avoiding them.

Twice when I've flown, the pilots had to re-route while in the air because of a thunderstorm. Another time, when I was coming home from Peru, it started storming after we landed & taxied off the runway in Miami. I forgot all of a sudden where it hit, but lightning struck somewhere (I believe it was the radar), & the airport had to be temporarily shut down. All we could do, of course, was sit there where we were. Once the storm passed, the airport reopened, & we made it up to the gate to get off, go through customs, & board again. I love thunderstorms-I really do! :)

two years ago, we caught the last flight of the day from dtw to mdw.
The weather was bad and the previous flight still had not left yet when we boarded.
We pushed back on time and started to taxi. After only a short distance, we pulled into the "penalty box" and the pilot came on to annouce a delay due to a reroute. It seemed like a hundred cell phones turned on mine included as we all made calls. The Captain said our reroute would either go up to Canada! or down to indy and around the storm. Once in the air,we were sent even further south to clear the storm. Probably one of the longest dtw to mdw flights.
Kind of embarassing that the penalty box was over by the Northwest gates ;-P

Planes ocasionally get hit with lightning, no big deal... it simply slides off the rods you see on the end of the wing.

Another way to check how the weather may impact your flight is to use 4INFO's mobile Flight Status service, which was written about in the January edition of Southwest Airlines "Spirit" magazine.

Simply send a text message with your airline and flight number (ex: 'swa 197') to 4INFO (44636 on the keypad) and your receive your flight status in a reply text message within seconds.

Want to know the weather where you are going? Then send 'w' + location (city name, zip, or area code), such as 'w 92111' or 'w chicago' and you'll get a 5-day forecast!

In case you haven't seen it, an entertaining case in point is the time-lapse movie of planes avoiding a thunderstorm near a FedEx hub:
