Sunny Abercrombie Sunny Abercrombie

Sunny is currently the Director of Culture Activities and Headquarters Distributions Services. She landed her first “real” job at SWA in the Finance Department in 1986.

Prior to that, she schlepped roofing tiles up ladders in the hot Texas sun; served numerous libations to inebriated patrons at a Dallas night club; and pumped millions of gallons of gas into cars as the Manager of a service Station. In January of 1986 Sunny wandered into the old corporate headquarters of SWA to have lunch with her aunt and was offered a temporary position in the Finance Department. That’s where her LUV affair with SWA began. From there she moved into the Employee Communications Department where she wrote and distributed the Employee Update to all Dallas Employees every Friday and sent it out via SITA machine (does anyone even remember what that is?) to all SWA locations. Sunny also had the honor and privilege of traveling the system to write stories about the various events and FUN shenanigans for Southwest’s internal newsletter LUV LINES. She then moved on to become the Project Specialist for the Executive Office where she became the coordinator of all things Culture. She discovered then that SWA was really not that much different than previous jobs she had held as she reverted back to her old days of “serving numerous libations to inebriated patrons” — this time they just happened to be SWA Employees attending SPIRIT Parties, Awards Banquets, and many, many other events! (She always knew that waitress training would come in handy!

Today Sunny has her hands full in her current position of Director Culture Activities and Headquarters Distribution Services. She is proud to say that she works with some of the most creative and FUN individuals on the payroll. Those departments include Culture Activities, Mail Room, Fulfillment Center, Shipping & Receiving, and Copy Center. Sunny’s responsibilities include supporting the efforts of our Company Culture Committee, Alumni Team, and our Local Culture Committees around the system; overseeing the coordination of numerous Company events such as SPIRIT Parties, Annual Awards Banquet, Messages to the Field, and other special events; and serving on the Board of the Employee Catastrophic Assistance Charity. Sunny is also the recipient of the Servant Leadership Award and the Winning SPIRIT Award.

Sunny is currently engaged to her beau of eight years, so by the time you read this, she will be changing her name again — this time to Abercrombie. She has promised this will be her last name change, so make sure you learn to spell it correctly!!!

  Reflections on Katrina

On this one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I think back with pride and LUV on the unbelievable Warrior Spirit our Employees displayed when they saw that their Fellow Employees were in need.  Catastrophic events such as Katrina truly bring out the best in People, as I witnessed firsthand.  Luckily, our Employee Catastrophic Ass

  All in a Day's Work

About 11 years ago, I started reporting directly to our President, Colleen Barrett. She told me at the time that my job would require me to do some pretty "off the wall" things from time to time. I was so excited about my new position that I eagerly nodded in agreement without giving it another thought.

"Welcome Aboard the Flight of Your Life"

I recently celebrated my 20th anniversary with SWA. (Back then they actually hired 12-year olds!) Thinking back to my first day on the job, I remember how excited I was when I walked through the front door of the General Offices. I was about to embark on a new career with a Company with a strong reputation for encouraging its Employees to have FUN on the job, and I'm all about FUN!

  35 Years Young

I recently spent a couple of hours during a photo shoot with the 16 remaining "Original Employees" of Southwest Airlines. We refer to them as "Originals" because they were hired during our first year of service.
