Sunny Abercrombie Sunny Abercrombie

Sunny is currently the Director of Culture Activities and Headquarters Distributions Services. She landed her first “real” job at SWA in the Finance Department in 1986.

Prior to that, she schlepped roofing tiles up ladders in the hot Texas sun; served numerous libations to inebriated patrons at a Dallas night club; and pumped millions of gallons of gas into cars as the Manager of a service Station. In January of 1986 Sunny wandered into the old corporate headquarters of SWA to have lunch with her aunt and was offered a temporary position in the Finance Department. That’s where her LUV affair with SWA began. From there she moved into the Employee Communications Department where she wrote and distributed the Employee Update to all Dallas Employees every Friday and sent it out via SITA machine (does anyone even remember what that is?) to all SWA locations. Sunny also had the honor and privilege of traveling the system to write stories about the various events and FUN shenanigans for Southwest’s internal newsletter LUV LINES. She then moved on to become the Project Specialist for the Executive Office where she became the coordinator of all things Culture. She discovered then that SWA was really not that much different than previous jobs she had held as she reverted back to her old days of “serving numerous libations to inebriated patrons” — this time they just happened to be SWA Employees attending SPIRIT Parties, Awards Banquets, and many, many other events! (She always knew that waitress training would come in handy!

Today Sunny has her hands full in her current position of Director Culture Activities and Headquarters Distribution Services. She is proud to say that she works with some of the most creative and FUN individuals on the payroll. Those departments include Culture Activities, Mail Room, Fulfillment Center, Shipping & Receiving, and Copy Center. Sunny’s responsibilities include supporting the efforts of our Company Culture Committee, Alumni Team, and our Local Culture Committees around the system; overseeing the coordination of numerous Company events such as SPIRIT Parties, Annual Awards Banquet, Messages to the Field, and other special events; and serving on the Board of the Employee Catastrophic Assistance Charity. Sunny is also the recipient of the Servant Leadership Award and the Winning SPIRIT Award.

Sunny is currently engaged to her beau of eight years, so by the time you read this, she will be changing her name again — this time to Abercrombie. She has promised this will be her last name change, so make sure you learn to spell it correctly!!!

  SWA 33rd Annual Chili Cookoff

We recently held the 33rd Southwest Airlines Chili Cookoff (and my 20th consecutive cookoff to attend). This annual event is one that I (along with my roll of Tums antacid) look forward to all year long. The setting is Shadow Creek Ranch located near Ferris, Texas, which is set up to look like a Dude Ranch. Chili Cookers begin arriving as early as 7:00 a.m.

  Telegraphese

Oh, Kim! I can't reveal everything about my dear friend! What on earth would he blog about? As to your earlier comment about allowing the Culture Chicks into your club/tree house for Blog Boys--you can count me in!! I was never allowed into any boys' clubs growing up, so I consider it a huge honor! Wanna become an honorary Culture Chick??? Or would that be Culture Capon?? Take your pick!! XOXO

On my "365 New Words A Day" calendar (okay, I am a word geek) that I got for Christmas last year, I just found the word telegraphese, which means to communicate in a terse, brief style like a telegraph operator would.  Many of you are too young to remember telegrams, but for over 100 years they served as a predecessor of e-mail and text/IM messaging by providing a

  Can we bottle that smell?

Kim, Marc, and Scott--thanks for your comments on my blog! I checked with Boeing, and according to them, the "fly-away" sticker price on a new 737-700 is around $60M. Whew! And, Scott--my Team makes this annual trek with the winners of the drawings from the Messages to the Field. There was also an entry form in LUV LINES over the summer to win various prizes in celebration of our 35th Anniversary--one of them being a trip to Boeing for 35 Employees and their guests. Since I don't work in Maintenance, I'm not really sure what happens once the aircraft is delivered to SWA, but I'm hoping one our bloggers out there can answer that question for you. And, yes--most of our new airplanes are delivered to Phoenix, but every now and then we get a new delivery to DAL.
