Becoming a Flight Attendant 101
Aug 30 2006
Last year 7,593 applicants were interviewed for the job of Flight Attendant. From this number 880 were hired.
The big question: "What are they looking for?" While serving on the Flight Attendant Hiring Team, I was looking for those who stood out from the group. Professional appearance, positive attitude, and enthusiasm. A question I asked myself was, "How will a passenger respond to this person... read more
Our New Orleans Heroes
Aug 28 2006
This is the first of three posts commemorating the one-year anniversary of Katrina. Be sure to read Bill Owen's post about how we are rebuilding our service to New Orleans and Sunny Abercrombie's post about how the Southwest Family came together to assist our Employees that were literally devastated by this horrible storm. But, before you... read more
Rebuilding New Orleans
Aug 28 2006
As we approach the first anniversary of the horrible destruction wrought on the New Orleans area by Hurricane Katrina, I thought a bit of celebration might be in order.
Along with all of Southwest Airlines, as well as the entire human community, I celebrate the spirit of survival that so many in New Orleans and all of the Gulf Coast displayed through their ordeal. Despite their tribulations the... read more
Reflections on Katrina
Aug 28 2006
On this one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I think back with pride and LUV on the unbelievable Warrior Spirit our Employees displayed when they saw that their Fellow Employees were in need. Catastrophic events such as Katrina truly bring out the best in People, as I witnessed firsthand. Luckily, our Employee Catastrophic Assistance Charity was created for events such as these.
I... read more

"GREATEST GENERATIONâ€Â
Aug 25 2006
World War II may seem like ancient history to some of us, but, in fact it's living history. A number of the brave men and women who helped shape the way we live in this great country are still with us. If you ever get the chance to meet someone from what Tom Brokaw cites as "The Greatest Generation," those who fought for this country, please thank them. I have been blessed to meet a few... read more

We're gonna give Herb a rest this time, and pick on our CEO Gary Kelly. Last Halloween, he dressed as Wild Bill Hickok, and we know that all you creative geniuses out there in the blogosphere can have fun coming up with a caption for this photo. (Click on the pic to enlarge.)

How much experience do pilots need to get hired?

How much experience do pilots need to get hired?
All airlines have a "minimum" experience level for applicants. Most involve hours logged in flight. There are different categories of pilot time, the most important being "Pilot In Command" time. Basically, if you were a Captain elsewhere or flew single seat planes (general aviation or fighter aircraft) all those hours count. The "biggie" hours... read more
I'm Feeling a Bit Verklempt...
Aug 21 2006
I'm a little emotional right now...and, no, it's not because I'm a girl...it's because I just finished reading Colleen's "Packet of Good Letters." Each quarter, our President, Colleen Barrett, circulates a select packet of commendations from Customers and Employees. Every Employee in the system is encouraged to take a few moments to read these letters...and I can speak from experience, that it is... read more
HUD Approach
Aug 18 2006
This photo was taken from the cockpit jump seat and it shows the view through the Heads Up Display (HUD) that Southwest Pilots use to find the airport in weather. It repeats all the necessary flight instrument data that the main instruments on the dash depict, all in one easy to find location. The nifty thing about the HUD is it allows SWA Captains to remain focused... read more
