What's the deal with candy corn?

Oct 30 2006
It's definitely not corn, and as a candy, it hardly qualifies (although Kandi Korn might be a good name for an adult entertainer).  Okay, so why am I ripping off Jerry Seinfeld with this rant about nothing?  Aside from the fact that October 30 is National Candy Corn Day (I didn't make this up!), the other day, we were holding a Blog Team meeting in the office of our "faculty advisor," Linda... read more

The gift that keeps on giving

Oct 26 2006
With Christmas close at hand, I am content knowing I have the perfect gift for many of my special friends. My gift to you is telling you about the Southwest Airlines 35th Anniversary Keepsake Cookbook. Let me tell you why it is a perfect gift! All proceeds from sales go to our Catastrophic Assistance Charity helping fellow Southwest Employees suffering severe financial hardship resulting from a... read more

Our Six-Month Blogoversary

Oct 25 2006
It seems like just yesterday we were hunched over the computer repeatedly hitting "refresh" and waiting for that first blog comment to appear. The anticipation and excitment of launching this blog six months ago now pales in comparison to the daily pride and awe I feel when I visit "Nuts" and see the incredible dialogue being generated between our Employees and blog visitors. I'll refrain from... read more

Share the Spirit

Oct 24 2006
I take way too many things for granted.  For example...playing baseball as a child.  Several weeks ago, our Department (People & Leadership Development) put on a carnival for The Miracle League--Arlington, Texas.  The event was our "Servant's Heart" day.  (Servant's Heart is part of our Core Values that we call The Southwest Way.)  The Miracle League was formed to provide an opportunity for... read more

Chicago!

Oct 23 2006
Last week, the Windy City saw more of that wind they are famous for. Meanwhile, across Lake Michigan, it was snowing like mad. But what a view in the clear! As much as I do this, I never get bored looking at the beautiful scenery going by. My daughter, now in flight training, agrees. I guess it's in the genes as my dad was also a pilot. What makes this view even better is the fact that I called... read more

What Am I??

Oct 20 2006
In the vein of Write Your Own Caption,  I thought it would be fun to show you pictures of some of the "common" things on our Luv Birds and see if you could figure out what they are.  I'll post the pictures and give you some time to guess, then post the answers for ya.  (Any Employee who knows what these items are, has been granted immunity from this challenge!)     read more

MAKING IT READY

Oct 19 2006
Those of you who read Sunny Abercrombie's post CAN WE BOTTLE THAT SMELL? will remember when she asked the question, "love that new car smell?" Well I'm here to tell you that there is nothing like the smell of a new Boeing 737-700. On September 26, 2006, aircraft N257WN was delivered to Southwest Airlines from the Boeing Company, and upon its arrival in Dallas, it taxied onto the ramp just outside... read more

Wright is not only wrong, it's gone!

Oct 17 2006
What a roller coaster of anticipation, disappointment, and elation the past two years have been (not to mention all the sleepless nights).  Almost two years ago, our CEO, Gary Kelly, told the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce that we were no longer "passionately neutral" on the Wright Amendment, a federal law that has been the albatross around the neck of our Dallas service since 1979.  In those... read more

THE WRIGHT STUFF!

Oct 17 2006
Somewhere, something has "frozen over." Today, for the first time in our 35-year history, Southwest Airlines began selling revenue tickets between Dallas' Love Field and Los Angeles; between Dallas and Chicago; between Dallas and La$ Vega$; between Dallas and Orlando, and between Dallas and Phoenix, plus 20 other cities spread all across our nationwide network.  In all, Southwest now gives... read more

O' the Joys of San Diego...

Oct 16 2006
Last month I had the opportunity to be in San Diego A LOT.  It seems that each of my trips for the month had at least one night in San Diego and some of them two nights.  That being said, I had quite a bit of time to pass on my overnights.  One beautiful, sunny afternoon, I rented a bicycle right next door to our hotel and took off for Coronado Island.  This island is approximately 7.4 sq. miles... read more
