Fun With Translations

Sep 28 2007
Okay, I will admit that this wasn't my original idea.  While in carpool on the way to work, Gordon Keith on The Ticket, a Dallas sports radio station, was talking about how he ran some pages of the station's web site through an online translation device.  He first translated a page into a foreign language, then took that translation and translated it back to English.  The results were hilarious... read more

The Freedom to LUV My Job

Sep 27 2007
I am a prime example of the fact that Southwest Airlines gives its Employees the Freedom to move around the Company. I've been at Southwest for nearly seven years, during which time I've held three very different jobs. I started my career at Southwest as a Recruiter. While in the People Department, I interviewed candidates for open positions in Finance and Internal Audit here at Headquarters. I... read more

"But I checked them all together..." part two

Sep 26 2007
This is a continuation of what happens when you check your bags and how they can be separated.  Part One can be found here. When the bag gets to T-point, it leaves the belt and goes onto a large circular carousel.  Bag carts are placed around the carousel, and Ramp Agents have specific flights in their zone to take bags from the carousel and place on a cart.   It doesn't happen often, but... read more

USS Blog Boy's Deployment Diary--Chapter Eight

Sep 25 2007
After stopping in Hong Kong, the Nimitz and Southwest Airlines Customer Francisco Delgado make a port call in Singapore before the carrier reached Hawaii.  LAND....AGAIN!!!! We pulled into Singapore just days after we pulled out of Hong Kong--talk about a huge morale booster! Singapore was an exciting place, and clean and green are the two words that can best describe Singapore. The first day it... read more

When Things Quit...

Sep 24 2007
A modern jet airliner is a brilliantly designed assembly of a million or so parts flying in close formation. Given the vast array of systems and ancillary parts that make up the aircraft, it is remarkable indeed that the dispatch reliability of these machines approaches 98 percent. In other words, in 98 departures out of 100, the jet is capable of doing its mission. Every now and then, something... read more

YET ANOTHER "WANNA GET AWAY" MOMENT FOR ME

Sep 21 2007
It's happened again. I have endured yet another "Wanna get away?" moment. Last week, as I was on my way to Love Field on Airport Freeway ("Texas' Ugliest Freeway"), I came upon a multi-car wreck that was over on the right shoulder. Because I was in the right lane, and because you MUST rubberneck as you idle by, I looked at the cars and the people standing around--and saw a lady who, from the back... read more

Ronald McDonald House Charities

Sep 20 2007
One of the neat things that we get to do at Southwest Airlines is host a dinner at a local Ronald McDonald House each quarter.  At this quarter's  Ronald McDonald house dinner in Chicago, we had a baseball theme.   The House is located in Lincoln Park and serves the Chicago Children's Hospital.  Ryan Vokac and co-chairperson Liz Adams (Southwest Flight Attendants) coordinate quarterly events... read more

To Assign or Not to Assign, That is the Question

Sep 19 2007
As many of you know, the question about whether to keep our open seating or to assign seats has been the Southwest question for the past couple of years.  Proponents of each process have been very vocal and heartfelt in support of their positions, and my post of last summer generated more than 700 comments (including those on a followup post).  To those who weighed in on this issue, thank you,... read more

NUTS About Taylor Hicks

Sep 17 2007
Working at Southwest, you never know what opportunities each day will bring.  Those opportunities can be particularly exciting when you are an Attorney for Southwest!  For me, the people-related opportunities are the best.  As you're about to hear, such people stories are nothing short of pure entertainment--American Idol style! A few weeks ago, a fan of Taylor Hicks called Southwest.  Lucky for... read more
