Southwest Airlines Partnerpalooza
Jun 15 2009
I have noticed there are several “paloozas” out there. Of course, there is the one that kicked off the whole palooza mania- Lollapalooza. There’s also Polar Palooza, Reef-A-Palooza, even Hula-palooza. While palooza is not defined in the dictionary, from what I can tell in my quest for a definition, palooza can be described as “fun” or a “giant party”. These happen to be two of our favorite... read more
Southwest and WestJet Begin Interline Cargo Agreement
Jun 15 2009
We like Cargo at Southwest Airlines, and we like milestones, so today is an exciting occasion as it marks our first International Cargo shipment. That’s right, hosers -- beginning today, Southwest will launch an interline Cargo agreement with our friends north of the border, WestJet, by allowing our Cargo Customers in six cities (Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Phoenix) to... read more
Thoughts on our Flag and Flag Day
Jun 12 2009
This Sunday is Flag Day. It is an easy holiday to overlook, but we need to stop and reflect on what our flag stands for. Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19-year-old elementary school teacher, placed a ten-inch, 38-star flag in a bottle on his desk and asked his students to write an essay on the flag and its significance. This observance was in commemoration of Congress adopting the Stars and Stripes as... read more
Fresh Air Movement
Jun 10 2009
Ever wonder how a wing works? Well, I did. I can say that in past tense because I asked Bob Sprague and recorded it for Red Belly Radio. Bob is the Assistant Technical Pilot in our Flight Operations Department here at Southwest Airlines, and he explains in rather simple terms how a geometric shape (a wing) can enable us to fly through the air (in an airplane). The short answer is “Lift” and... read more

Jun 09 2009
Okay, picture this:
Scene One: Medium Shot--Office area, man in business suite: You are walking back and forth in your office, and you can’t seem to understand why that business deal is not closed yet. You call your client, he’s not in, he’s at the business convention, ugh!! Sr. Destino appears and asks you: “What are you waiting for? Grab your bag and close that deal!”
Scene Two: ... read more

Spring Break Glide
Jun 08 2009
Spring Break this year was a lot fun, my family and I visited Austin, Texas, and while there we spent a lot of time visiting many museums and other historic sites. One eatery that was highly recommended was a restaurant called The Oasis. It sits on the edge of a cliff that overlooks Lake Travis, so we were able to get a patio table to watch an actual Oasis. The view was great... and so was the... read more
An Emerald Land--Portland at Age 15
Jun 05 2009
For ten, all-too-short years, the sight of Mt. Hood passing off the left side of the airplane was a welcome-home greeting to me. The eternally snow-capped volcano and its Cascade siblings serve as a fortress wall that make Portland and the Willamette Valley an inland island of green.
The only other places where I have landed that were this green are Belfast in Northern Ireland and Inverness... read more
Three Cheers for 15 Years!
Jun 04 2009
Thirty-eight years ago this month, Southwest Airlines began its relationship in the Puget Sound region when we purchased our first Boeing plane. Fifteen years ago this weekend, Southwest Airlines broadened its LUV affair in the Northwest by offering scheduled flights from Seattle, Portland, and Spokane on June 6, 1994. That’s when I came on board and joined the Southwest Family--and I have yet... read more
Inside the June Issue of Spirit Magazine

You know how people love to brag about how work-stressed they are? I’m like everybody else that way, which, frankly, is pretty much a flat-out lie.
For example, I’m writing this on my lunch hour. How noble of me. What I won’t usually tell you is that I’m writing this with my feet up on my desk and a Snickers Bar in my mouth while playing Brad Paisley really loud on the computer. (It’s... read more
