The LUV That Never Dies

Jul 14 2006
Although Southwest is a relatively young Company, we have our share of Retirees, especially when you consider that a lot of our folks have come to Southwest as a second career. However, when it comes time to "hang up the old Southwest ID card," it is hard to let go of the Southwest Family, and fortunately for them, and more importantly for us, they don't have to. The LUVers Group was formed by... read more

IAD A Dream

Jul 13 2006
Today's release of our schedules and fares into our newest airport, Washington Dulles ("IAD"), reminded me that our initial announcement that we would be entering the IAD market raised a lot of questions from Employees and from other Southwest stakeholders. Along with several of my fellow Employees, I visited IAD the evening of and morning after that April 4th announcement to get a closer look at... read more

SWA 33rd Annual Chili Cookoff

Jul 12 2006
We recently held the 33rd Southwest Airlines Chili Cookoff (and my 20th consecutive cookoff to attend). This annual event is one that I (along with my roll of Tums antacid) look forward to all year long. The setting is Shadow Creek Ranch located near Ferris, Texas, which is set up to look like a Dude Ranch. Chili Cookers begin arriving as early as 7:00 a.m. to set up their booths and get the... read more

Forget Me Not...

Jul 11 2006
I know I'm a few months late bringing this to your attention, at least for this year, but I feel it's my duty to make sure you are aware that on one day, May 24,  all Aviation Maintenance Technicians receive gifts of appreciation. You've heard of "Administrative Assistant Day," where administrative assistants receive flowers, balloons, cookies, and greeting cards of all kinds, and Aviation... read more

Those who serve

Jul 07 2006
As the war in Iraq continues, I'm glad to see TV shows celebrating those who have dedicated their time and, for some, their lives.  Too often we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget the meaning of what these brave, often young, men and women do for our country.  One particular show told stories of our brave soliders fighting in Iraq.  About ten minutes into it, I couldn't watch... read more

A Week In the Life of a SWA Flight Attendant

Jul 06 2006
I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you what it is like to be a Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant. I figure the easiest way to do this is to describe a recent trip. It's a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday three-day trip with layovers in Los Angelas (LAX) and Salt Lake City (SLC). It's Sunday night and tomorrow, I have a trip. I'm a commuter so my first order of business is getting to work... read more

Write your own caption

Jul 03 2006
I don't know about you, but one of my favorite movies is Airplane, and I just crack up over the scene where the ground crew is wiping the cockpit windows and lifting the nose radome to check the dripstick.  Well, one of our great Customers, Shar Lira, took this photo on June 21 in Phoenix of one of our Captains, who suspiciously looks like our fellow blogger, Ray Stark. Anyway, here's a chance... read more

Thunderstorms

Jul 03 2006
A Customer recently said to me:  "I checked the weather for my flight and there are thunderstorms in the forecast. I am worried about what may happen as we fly along." (Here goes Ray on another wacky analogy so hold on....) Think of a thunderstorm as a giant tree --that moves! If you get in your car to drive to the mall, all the real trees are along the roadside, and are unlikely to jump in your... read more
