Last month, Southwest announced its intent to serve Northwest Florida’s new international airport near Panama City, Florida. The airport is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in May 2010, which is also when we plan to begin service. Airport planners have been debating what to name the new airport, and have made a decision. The name of the new airport is Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. The new name emphasizes the Panhandle’s sandy allure for tourists.
Southwest is not yet releasing specific service details, but plan to operate at least two daily nonstop flights each from the airport to four destinations across our 68-airport network for a total of eight daily nonstop flights when we begin. Specific details on our fares and schedules will be available in December 2009.

Hi SWA,
With the new Northwest Florida airport, you will need again to update your interactive map. While you're at it, please consider the following:
(1) It's long past time to get rid of the asterisks after Boston and Milwaukee.
(2) Relocate the dots for Chicago and Milwaukee. It looks like these airports are as close as San Francisco and Oakland, but not at all true, they are almost as far apart as Indianapolis and Louisville. Chicago dot should move southeast, much closer to Indiana border than to Wisconsin. Milwaukee dot should move slightly north.
(3) Albuquerque and Portland dots are also off a bit. Albuquerque dot should move east; it's almost the same longitude as El Paso. Portland dot should move a bit east, so that it is south of where the Columbia River flows westbound rather than near where it turns northbound.
(4) Move print identifier of New York LaGuardia closer to the dot, maybe putting it to the right in the Atlantic, just loke Long Island's print identifier. Right now, one must think for a while before one is sure which dot is NYC; it's almost as close to Philadelphia as to the real NYC dot.
(5) Move Little Rock dot. It should be in almost the exact center of the state; it looks too far northwest now.
Thanks. I worked in cartography. Shawn
I am just so excited to hear the news about the new airport near Panama City Beach, Florida and that my FAVORITE airline, Southwest Airlines, will be flying there! I just hope Nashville, Tennessee is one of the destination cities because I will definitely be taking flights with my friends to Florida on a regular basis! Great News!
Glad you are coming to NW Florida, just wish Panama City could be a little more original with their name selection since Northwest Florida Regioal Airport operates out of Ft Walton Beach. Looking forward to schedules in December to see if I can make connections for flights to San Francisco.
Any news on when local positions will be posted?
Nashville, Nashville, Nashville!!!! Pretty please.
I am very happy to see you flying to Panama City although Pensacola would be better.
Mobile, Alabama is still too far from any of your destinations to make the trip easy taking an additional 3 hours by car from New Orleans or Panama City. Please consider adding Mobile as a destination.
How about Gulfport/Biloxi?
I am so excited to hear my favorite airline will be traveling to PCB! I too hope that Nashville will be one of your destination cities. Their are many of us who would be traveling frequently from here!
Outstanding news!!! Our daughter and her family live in Destin, and Granddaughter attends FSU. Now we can fly SWA to the panhandle and save the long drive from New Orleans (We only fly SWA!) Thanks SWA!! Only hope you have a non-stop from Phoenix (hint-hint).
Please pick Nashville as one of your destination cities. We and our friends would go on Southwest! PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!
