SOUTHWEST AIRLINES NAMED OFFICIAL COMMERCIAL AIRLINE OF THE HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK

May 22 2009

The Honor Flight Network proudly announces Southwest Airlines as its Official Commercial Airline.  Honor Flight serves the nation’s Veterans by taking them to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial, free of charge.  Partnering with Southwest Airlines will allow Honor Flight to accomplish its goals more expeditiously because of the airline’s generous, multi-year commitment of complimentary tickets.

“Southwest Airlines Employees are passionate about the Honor Flight mission,” said Linda Rutherford, Vice President of Communications and Strategic Outreach. “Southwest was founded on the value of Freedom, and we are honored to give back to these Veterans who gave so much to preserve the Freedoms we have today."  Honor Flight’s priority is to transport the Veterans of any conflict with a terminal illness who would like to visit their individual memorial and the most senior Veterans, the survivors of WWII.

Southwest Airlines has a long history of supporting the men and women who fight for the nation’s Freedoms. The airline is proud to have more than 700 Employees serve in the National Guard and Reserves.  In fact, Southwest Airlines was recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for its commitment and support of the airline’s National Guard and Reserve Employees.

In 2007, Southwest Airlines was named one of the Top 50 Military Friendly Employers. Based in Dallas, Southwest Airlines currently serves 65 cities in 33 states, with service to New York LaGuardia, and Boston Logan starting this summer, and Milwaukee later in the year.

Thank you for your service!

I was flying from Midway on business this morning & saw the Honor Flight crew & Southwest crew partnering together to honor our Vets. There's nothing better than knowing that Southwest continues to distinguish itself as a great & standard setting organization. Thank you for honoring our parents & grandparents in the way that they deserve before it's too late!

I applaud Southwest for their wonderful commitment to our WWII vets. I recently accompanied a group of veterans from Detroit and I can't give enough praise to Southwest Airlines. The pilot, wearing an American flag tie, greeted the war heroes in the boarding area and sat down to chat with them before the flight. Our flight attendant also spent time shaking hands and talking to vets before boarding. Once on the plane the attendant announced to all the passengers the mission of Honor Flight and cheers and clapping resonated throughout the plane. Before the jet landed in Baltimore the attendant led the passengers in a rousing rendition of "God Bless America". Thank you Southwest Airlines for a very memorable day.

Have always liked Southwest. When I happened to be a paying passenger on an Honor Flight into Baltimore last week, I was very impressed to learn that you provide the flights for free. The crew was so respectful of the veterans. Thanks- you're staus in my mind just raised even higher.

You can go to www.honorflight.org or search for a local chapter such as www.honorflightofdallas.org to print or fill out an application. Also, Honor flight is always open to donations from companies or individuals. Thank you Southwest for your support.

I am a Flight Attendant for Southwest and was honored to have this group on one of my flights. It was such an honor, privilege, and emotional moment to get to meet some of our U.S. veterans going to see their memorial. This a wonderful organization and I am so proud of my company for sponsoring them! They still need donations to pay for hotels, meals and misc. travel expenses though so please give since they gave us so much... our freedom!

I have been privileged to be a guardian and leader of 7 flights organized by Central Prairie Honor Flights of Kansas. To all of those SWA employees that I have had contact with, I want to let you know that you all have been fantastic in dealing with our American heroes. Just this morning, we had a ticket that had been purchased by our committee to transport a guardian to DC. He was not able to go when his Dad, the vet, who had to go to the hospital. It took me perhaps 3 minutes to visit with Stuart of your Customer Relations department, before we received a credit that will enable a future attendee to fly.
The complimentary tickets we've received for our hub have transported veterans that would have passed away before we could have raised the funds to send them.
And now we receive the news that SWA will hopefully be serving Wichita, Ks. with the proposed buyout!
Again, on behalf of a grateful HF committee and our Veterans, thank you for all you do!

For what Southwest airlines has done is a true gesture of friendship and dedication to America's veterans. Unfortunately with each passing day we're losing over 1,000 WW II veterans and while thats very saddening it also reminds me personally never to forget their sacrifices. As a passenger on southwest airlines multiple times I couldn't think of a more veteran friendly airline that is so kind, devoted, and willing to be so courteous and understanding. I've personally greeted 6 groups of veterans at BWI Airport from all over this country and I can personally attest to how emotional it can be. Tears are definitely not an uncommon sight and on one Honor Flight earlier this year I just completely lost all my composure and just began crying, because it really surprises me how all these veterans really touch your heart even though you just met them. They're an outstanding and fantastic group of men and women and their sacrifices won't soon be forgotten by me or by my generation.
