Southwest doubles frequent flier credits, taking advantage of increased air traffic and new destinations

Sep 29 2009

Last week Southwest Airlines brought out its big guns to keep load factors healthy and keep air traffic growing. They announced double credits for all flights between now and October 31. While other airlines have been involved in significant cutbacks to service, Southwest has been deploying its fleet and fine-tuning its schedule keeping their overall number of flights relatively constant.

Dear Southwest,

By adding new destinations, you have taken away my Pittsburgh to Oklahoma City flights effective November 1, 2009. After that date if I want to fly Southwest from PIT - OKC, I will have to book two individual flights. (A round trip between PIT and Chicago Midway and another from Chicago Midway to OKC.) On top of this, I am two credits from earning my next reward. I had hoped to bank that reward in case of an emergency.

I have been flying Southwest since Braniff went bankrupt. When I moved from OKC to PIT in 1994, I would drive to Cleveland just to fly Southwest. It was a glorious day when you began flying out of PIT and now you are breaking my heart.

You have seen me through several long-distance relationships to finding the man of my dreams, many vacations, and helping me get back to OKC when my mother passed away in 1999. My father still resides in OKC and lives on his own; in December he will be celebrating his 92nd birthday and I wanted to be there to help him celebrate. Now I will have to purchase two individual tickets and have to carry my luggage onboard.

Would you please reinstate the PIT - OKC routes?

Best regards,
Nancy

Dear Southwest, your people and service are great, and I fly Southwest as my first choice whenever I can. This means, however, I often have to drive 5 hours to get a flight! I live 5 minutes away from the Northwest Florida Regional Airport, one that you are considering expanding into. PLEASE DO! It is a much better and more central than Pensacola. I believe it has more call for SW services and you would not have as much competition. With your airline I can fly to many different places on the same journey - Missouri to visit my grandchildren, on to Dallas for business, on to San Antonio to visit friends, to Jacksonville or Ft. Lauderdale to visit family and then fly home. I can do the same thing if my trip takes me to New England - another path I often take. Your airline is truly the alternative to driving for me! We really need Southwest in the panhandle and we need you most in Valparaiso!
