Going Green: Driving Green

Aug 07 2012
Visiting friends across town, heading into work, or going shopping means that, for the majority of us, we have to hop into our cars and drive. Brian Lusk wrote a great Green Tuesday post a couple of weeks ago about his commute on public transportation to work, and we certainly encourage you to think of the alternatives to driving, such as public transportation, carpooling, and discovering... read more

Going Green: A Recycling Update... and Fun With Dryer Lint (Yes... Dryer Lint)

Jun 05 2012
Have you ever heard of World Environment Day?  Me neither.  Apparently, World Environment Day is held every year on June 5 and was established by the United Nations in 1972 to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment.  This year, the conference will be hosted in Brazil and the theme is Green Economy.   One aspect of “Green Economy” that I found interesting was... read more

Monarchs are Cleared for Landing in the Garden!

May 03 2012
Over the past several seasons, the HDQ Community Garden has been evolving right in the midst of our busy campus. We’ve had lots of fun and plowed through many opportunities to learn and teach about earth-friendly gardening methods with our SWA family while sharing our crops with our surrounding community food banks.  We have always aspired to share our learning and have been open to new... read more

An Employee Comes Home

The 87 members of the Army Reserve Unit waiting to board the Southwest 737 heading to Colorado and back to their families after a year’s deployment in Afghanistan were ecstatic to be on the final leg of their journey.  But one was more excited than the others.  Known for the last 13 months as Army Specialist Nein, she’d soon be returning to her normal existence where she’s better known... read more

Workin' at the Plane Wash

Jan 31 2012
On Fridays, the car wash in my neighborhood is always full of young men getting their cars date-ready.  Here at Southwest, we are the LUV airline, but impressing the ladies isn’t the only thing on our minds when we wash our planes. To get an airplane ready for a wash, Appearance Technicians pull on their big water-repellant suits and drag out the hoses.  Mechanics position the airplane... read more

Flashback Fridays: Off to the Desert

Jan 27 2012
Thirty years ago, Southwest Airlines followed Horace Greely’s advice of “Go west, young man,” when we opened San Diego, Phoenix, and Las Vegas on January 31, 1982.  I had hoped to include some early photos from San Diego this week, but the ones I thought I had found were for Phoenix.  I will keep looking, but in the meantime, we have some interesting photos from our early days in the... read more

Our Resolve

Jan 02 2012
I'm being swallowed by pillows of white, chocolate, and strawberry. So heavy I can't swim, but so tasty I'm swallowing my way to the surface.  I make my way to the top of this endless frost to see a sea of color. This milkshake river is not a detriment; it is a panacea. I am in ice cream paradise. Just as I'm about to dive back in, my alarm goes off.  It's all a dream. At... read more
