I work for a retailer and travel the country setting new stores. I'm on the road 10 days and home for 4; then repeat. Needless to say; I get on a Southwest plane a lot!

Fun Facts

Favorite Southwest Moment

Too many to mention! However; always having fun flight attendants is a must; and always happens :) A few months ago; a flight attendant on our flight from Kansas City to Louisville, Ky was from Louisville. The pilot was from the east coast; and the two went back and forth saying "Loooey-ville" or "loooois-ville" the pilot even interrupted the flight attendant during her speech over safety when she said the city we were going to and said it his way. the flight attendant then said "go back to Worchester; pronouncing it wrong. lol

Meteorology Monday: June 4 - June 10

Jun 04 2012
The week ahead is shaping up to be rather wet, especially the first half, including some potentially beneficial rainfall across Texas, Florida, and other parts of the south.  The Northeast will also see scattered showers the first few days of the week, with thunderstorm chances also increasing by mid-week.  Windy with some blowing dust in the Southwest on Monday and Tuesday, and... read more

Going Green: A Recycling Update... and Fun With Dryer Lint (Yes... Dryer Lint)

Jun 05 2012
Have you ever heard of World Environment Day?  Me neither.  Apparently, World Environment Day is held every year on June 5 and was established by the United Nations in 1972 to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment.  This year, the conference will be hosted in Brazil and the theme is Green Economy.   One aspect of “Green Economy” that I found interesting was... read more

Behind Spirit's June Issue

Jun 05 2012
We at Southwest’s Spirit Magazine love to do stories about people who do things for others. Those stories help us live up to our name, after all. But to be honest with you, the true do-gooders of this world sometimes make me feel guilty. Yeah, I’m a good citizen and all that but I haven’t healed the sick in Calcutta or restored ocean habitat off New Jersey. Do you ever feel like that? As if you... read more

The first flight to SJD arrived promptly at 3:30 p.m. and was greeted with a water cannon salute.  All the Customers onboard the inaugural flight were given AirTran t-shirts and swag, and a few lucky winners received excursion... read more

An Artist on the Day of Ascension

Jun 05 2012
When you walk New York's streets near 10th and 5th, the Church of Ascension doesn't immediately stick out.  In a concrete jungle abound with towering buildings, an unassuming church is easily overlooked.  A few steps inside, however, I quickly realized what our friends at The Artists Den had found: a figurative "diamond in the urban rough."  They have a knack for this sort of... read more

Responding to Disaster

Jun 06 2012
The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every nine minutes somewhere in the country. This could be a tornado, house, or apartment fire or any of the other natural disasters that occur in our 50 states. The Red Cross’ workforce is 97 percent volunteers and only 3 percent staff! That is amazing if you think that in 2011 the Red Cross opened more than 1,000 shelters, provided more than six... read more

Awestruck by the Tuskegee Airmen

Jun 06 2012
Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible. I started by taking a call from a gentleman named Glen Thorne in Twin Falls, ID, who contacted SWA with an unusual request.  He told me that Quinn, his four-year-old son, has a passion for the military and will approach different military personnel to say a simple “Thank you for your... read more

Nashville or Bust: Maddie's Journey to Music City

Jun 07 2012
It was a typical Monday in the office—emails, conference calls, reports—until I answered the phone and learned about Maddie’s story.   On the other end of the line, Oklahoma Center Support Leader Leslie Harris shared the story of a little girl, Maddison “Maddie” Murphy, a young singer/songwriter who dreamed of going to Nashville, guitar in tow, to share her music on the same streets... read more

"On The Fly": Excess Baggage

Jun 07 2012
Legendary Customer Service is not routine.  It’s jarring, unanticipated, and for the lack of a better term, overly reasonable.  Something legendary is also inherently memorable.  If On The Fly only showed sunshine and rainbows, I don’t know that I’d watch.  Certainly, I prefer the positive stories to delays and other obstacles, but erasing the negative would be inauthentic,... read more
