Behind-the-Scenes of a Southwest Airlines Commercial Shoot, Grab Your Bag...It's On!

Jun 01 2009

What an awesome experience it was to get to be behind-the-scenes of a Southwest Airlines commercial shoot.  It started at 6 a.m. as the small army of trucks came through the gates of our maintenance facility in Dallas.  These professionals unpacked their trucks, and immediately began setting up the Southwest aircraft you see time-lapsed in the video above.  They made it look so easy as they began lighting the entire plane for the first shoot.  It was incredible to see that even though they were using a real Southwest aircraft, no schedules were compromised because of how efficient they were in their work and all of our flights ran as scheduled!

Many of the actors in the commercial are Southwest Employees, who, for some, are making their television debuts.  They were naturals.  I love Southwest because the Employees come first and play such a huge role in our success, so why not let them tell the story of the Company.

Let's grab our bags because this behind-the-scenes video is...On!

I love love love the Southwest commercials and I love love love the fact that some of the actors are real employees. I told my son that I think that some of those people in commercial look like they could be real employees which make the commercial even cooler.
Your marketing department should be give a B for Brilliant for this ad campaign and the Southwest executives shoud be given a "SS" for super smart in not charging for bags. I travel alot for work and pleasure and southwest is now my first choice.

Keep up the great work for looking out and not nickle and diming the frequent flyer and those that fly on a budget.

Wendy,

Not some, but ALL of the people featured in the commercials are real Southwest Employees... we held an open audition, and it just goes to show our 35,000 Employees all have "star power." Glad you like them.

ITS ON!!! This is our 1st flight with SW. Bag Flys Free! was definitely an incentive. This is a first time we are actually taking a suitcase instead of our usual carry-on bags. We are off to Steamboat Springs, Colorado for skiing and we are excited that we both have been able to pack enough warm clothes and our suitcase is flying free:):)

I really love the southwest airline comercials with the office buddies. It's as funny as the Sonic commercial's take out buddies. They have a Chevy Case/Gene Wilder flare to them.

To the VERY impressive looking first officer... GREAT JOB, SCOTT!!! The true full circle with Southwest; from flying a desk on the West side to push backs from the East side. Now you're a TV star too!!! Living the Dream, baby;-) Who'd of thunk it?

I love it! - Doug D.

To whom it may concern,

I love the new Bags Fly Free add where the ground crew lift their shirts. Very funny, and original. I wish you would share more about how that ad came to be. Good work. Keep it up.

With best wishes,

Eric

Hi! Love your commercials, and thinks it is brilliant to use satisfied employees to promote the business. Quick question: in the newer commercial there are 2 dark haired Captains debating each other in a packed airplane. Are these 2 gentlemen brothers? twins? They look like they are siblings! Thanks for letting me know and keep entertaining us with your commercials!
